Playing soccer has so many benefits
If you asked the average person why soccer is good for you, they’d most likely say “It’s exercise”. Of course exercising is great but there’s many more benefits to come from soccer than exercise.
Physical Health Benefits
It’s a given that anyone playing recreational soccer will be fitter than someone who is sat on the couch all day. However soccer has many benefits both physical and mental. It doesn’t matter who you are, once you’ve read these reasons why soccer is good for you I’m certain that you’ll want to buy a ball and start playing.
Improved cardiovascular system
Running around for 90 minutes is going to improve your health, there’s no doubt about it. Soccer is a form of cardio. In-fact some may argue it’s the best form of cardio.
If you think about it Soccer is High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). You walk, jog and run over short distances for the course of 90 minutes or however long you’re training.
Are you a bigger person? HIIT is often used to burn calories and fat in short periods of time. But as you’re playing for up to 90 minutes you’ll be burning a crazy number of calories. Make sure to refill after the match. If you are trying to use soccer to lose weight, make sure you’re eating in a caloric deficit.
If you’re not looking to lose weight and are interested in playing soccer or increasing your cardiovascular system, play some soccer, enjoy it and don’t overthink it!
Running with the ball at your feet with players moving around you, you’re going to have to decide when and where to pass. Maybe you’re a defender? You’re jockeying the opponent waiting for the right time to slide in and win the ball back. Soccer will teach you and anyone who plays it the skill of being decisive. This will transfer into all areas of your life and you may see a better quality of life because of it.
Who knew soccer would increase how quick you make decisions? It may also increase the speed of your reactions, it will only be a marginal increase though.
“Endurance (also related to sufferance, resilience, constitution, fortitude, and hardiness) is the ability of an organism to exert itself and remain active for a long period of time, as well as its ability to resist, withstand, recover from, and have immunity to trauma, wounds, or fatigue. It is usually used in aerobic or anaerobic exercise. The definition of ‘long’ varies according to the type of exertion – minutes for high intensity anaerobic exercise, hours or days for low intensity aerobic exercise. Training for endurance can have a negative impact on the ability to exert endurance strength unless an individual also undertakes resistance training to counteract this effect.” – Wikipedia
The more you play soccer for prolonged periods of time you’ll begin to find it easier to last the full 90 minutes. This is because your muscular endurance is increasing. You may also grow leg muscle to some extent, but don’t be afraid. You’re not going to get tree trunk legs from playing soccer.
Fat loss & improved body composition
Any form of cardio will allow you to experience fat loss providing you’re in a caloric deficit. As explained earlier, Soccer holds many similarities to HIIT. HIIT is believed to be the best form of cardio when it comes to shedding the fat and maintaining muscle mass. Because of this your body composition will be better than ever.
Improved Mental Health
While Mental health has always been important, people are more aware of it nowadays. Soccer is a great way for people to stay mentally stable. People who play soccer will find a newborn confidence, belief in their ability and after every match you’ll probably feel proud too.
As stated in our article “why soccer is so popular”, soccer is an incredibly social game. It doesn’t matter whether you’re playing, watching or just randomly talking about it on the street.
Learn to cooperate and interact with people
Unless you’re playing some form of 1v1, such as goalie, goalie or a small freestyle pitch, you’ll always be playing with other players. In a competitive game you’ll need to interact with your teammates in a way that will help you win the match. To win a match you’ll need to be on the same wavelength as your teammates and learn their how they interact as well as their traits.
Make new friends
Attending weekly training sessions and matches along with a squad of 18 other people, you’re bound to make relationships. A lot of these will be as simple as acknowledging each other on the street, while other relationships will be a lot more close and personal. Soccer will allow you to make friends with people who share the same interests as you. If you don’t have many friends and want to make some, joining a soccer team will help you do exactly that.
It takes a lot for someone to run around a pitch for 90 minutes. Physically you’ll need a good cardiovascular system & strong muscles to help you through the match. There’s also a big mental component to soccer.
If you want to stay on the pitch, you’ll need to make sure that you are up for every tackle, fighting for 50/50 balls and constantly working hard. If not, chances are you’ll get substituted. You’ll need to learn to stay mentally strong as your muscles start to ache & you start feeling fatigued otherwise your performance will suffer.
You can have all the talent in the world but if you’re not willing to put the hard work in, you’re not going to get anywhere. If you don’t work hard in soccer, both your teammates and coaches aren’t going to respect you.
Ask yourself as a player would you rather have 1.)10 other teammates that are willing to close down the opponent, work hard on the back foot and make forward runs when counter attacking or 2.) teammates that are walking, not willing to put in tackles or even move and open up space for you?
Nobody in their right mind would prefer scenario 2. If you’re a parent looking to instil work ethic into your child, Soccer will definitely do this.
The feeling of determination
Being determined is a great feeling. Determination is something that many people don’t have. Not everyone will be determined to get better at soccer but the people that start playing and love the game will be. For some children this will be their first taste of determination, as for adults, soccer may rekindle that fire and determination that is lost.
Soccer is great fun
While all of the above benefits are great. There’s one key point. Soccer is great fun. It’s important that you have something that you enjoy doing. If you give soccer a go and it’s not for you, fair enough at least you tried. If you give it a go and absolutely love it, you’ve now got a hobby that will also benefit you in many other ways.
